Things that are cheaper at the shop across the road than at the supermarket.

Eggs. Supermarkets have them upwards of $2.69/dozen. Across the road: $1.99/dozen (admittedly they're "medium" size instead of "large" or bigger)

Milk. At the supermarket a 3 litre jug of the GENERIC milk is over $4. Across the road, the BIG NAME BRAND is $2.99.

Cadbury 250g chocolate. Okay, this one's borderline. They're $3.99 across the road, and the regular price at Coles & Woolworths is around $4.05, but they're on sale all the time for $2.49ish.

Bread. 99 cents a loaf across the road, twice that at a supermarket.

Roast chickens. Well, maybe not cheaper, but they taste better, and they're cooked more thoroughly.

Whatever.

A few thoughts about pregnancy (yet again).

  • I never thought getting my shoes to fit could be the highlight of my day.
  • Never, EVER get between a pregnant woman and a toilet.
  • What belly button?
  • I'm convinced that the last 2 months or so of pregnancy are uncomfortable by design, so that when you get to the birth, you're psychologically ready for it (as in sick to death of it and screaming "GET THIS THING OUT OF ME!")
  • If I had a broken arm at the moment, I'd be up the creek, since my abdominal muscles don't seem to be doing much of anything when I have to get up from a sitting/squatting/lying down position.
  • I'm beginning to understand why I see so many pregnant women in dresses instead of pants or shorts. Not easy to bend your leg enough to get them on. Dresses require very little bending.
  • I'm finding very little motivation to do ANYTHING at the moment. Don't wanna be at the computer, don't wanna work in the kitchen, don't wanna sit & read or watch TV, don't even wanna sleep because it takes so long to get comfortable.
  • I never actually notice how big my belly is when I'm looking down at it. Then the other day I saw my reflection in the car window, and sheesh, I was HUGE!
  • Okay, okay, maybe I'll post a picture of myself sometime in the next month. But I won't promise anything, because I've never liked having pictures taken of myself. Oh, and the more people ask me about it, the less likely I am to do it. Just a warning. :-)
  • Yes, the official due date is the 29th of March, but Darrin is predicting the 6th of April (Good Friday), and I'm predicting the 8th (Easter). Given that first babies are usually about 10 days late, it seems like that'll be the weekend it happens. But basically we're not going to be too concerned unless I go two weeks over.
  • This morning I told Darrin that I didn't really like most of the girls' names on our list, so this kid better be a boy. A favourite boy name IS emerging, however, at least for me. No clue yet on middle names though.

People are stupid.

Okay. So the shop across the road from us has an exit right across the road from us as well. And nobody actually pays any attention to the big red "NO ENTRY" sign next to it, and we're used to that.

But what I can't understand is why, when there's an entrance to the shop off the main road, do some IDIOTS turn onto our street from the main road and then into the shop carpark through the exit driveway? Exactly what sense does that make? I've seen THREE people do that in the last 24 hours.

The Big Baby Wish List

Okay. So here's what we still need for the baby, in case you're trying to think of a gift. I don't even care if they're second-hand, as long as they're in good shape and don't have obvious lingering stains.

  • Cloth nappies. I've just settled on 60cm/24" square ones, but I'm not overly picky. Around here they seem to come in packs of 12. We already have one pack. I'd like to have about 3 dozen to start off.
  • Cot (crib) sheets, blankets, etc.
  • Nappy covers/pilchers. Apparently there's several different kinds, so I guess whatever. I always thought plastic pants looked really uncomfortable though.
  • Clothes, all sizes, gender neutral (since we don't actually KNOW we're having a boy). Specifically: socks (only have 2 pairs so far), whatever you call those bodysuits that snap at the crotch (I never paid attention to what they're called in the US, and I'm not sure yet what they're called here either).
  • How many bibs does one baby need? I think we have close to a dozen already. If you don't think that's enough, feel free to give us another one or two.
  • Toys that don't require batteries.

Random thoughts on pregnancy

Okay, not really "random" since we have a theme, but so what?

  • Swollen ankles/feet/legs are not fun. The prescribed treatment/prevention for this (keeping legs elevated and resting) is also not fun for someone who hates just sitting around doing nothing. Luckily the worst of it only lasted a couple days (thanks to 2 - or was it 3 - days of temperatures over 40). Not to mention the fact that when I DID put my feet up, after about 10-15 minutes, my right foot would go numb and I'd have to move it again anyway.

  • I don't buy the idea that when you're pregnant, your mental ability goes down the tubes. Mine certainly hasn't. And Darrin's sister-in-law, who just had a baby in December and always hated math, did a math course during her pregnancy and found out she actually likes it. How could this happen if pregnancy is supposed to make you stupid? This link explains what I think of the whole idea - basically that although pregnant women feel like they perform worse, there's really no difference. So it sounds like it's one of those things that we're conditioned to believe because everybody says it, even though there's no proof.

  • I am now at the heaviest weight I've ever been. I even weigh more than Darrin.

  • We have a nappy bag now. Go-Lo (one of those clearance stores) was selling some duffel bags 2 for $10, or $12.99 each. Yeah, go figure. So we've got a nappy bag and a backup, which I reckon I'll pack as an emergency hospital bag in case we end up going to hospital at the last minute.

  • I have a list of possible names. Had 13 boys names and 16 girls names, then Darrin crossed off two boys names. I've been pickier with the boys names because that's what I think we'll need, but it pays to have a backup anyway. (And before you ask, I'm not ready to post any of them here yet, and may not be till we post the birth announcement.)

  • One of these days I'll start washing the baby clothes and nappies that are sitting in the laundry room. I'd prefer to wait till I get another two packs of nappies, so I only have to do it once, but we'll see what happens.

  • Okay, here's a question. There's this "nesting" thing that tends to happen shortly before a woman gives birth, where she goes on a mad cleaning/organising frenzy or something. But I get these phases all the time, since long before I was pregnant, so how do I know if it's that or nesting when it starts to happen? I get these moods once every month or so, where I do ALL the cleaning in a couple hours, then start on doing 2-3 different cooking projects, and Darrin doesn't know what's hit him when he gets home that night.

  • Maternity clothes are ridiculously expensive and/or ugly. So far I've managed with 3 shirts, 1 pair of pants, and 1 pair of shorts, plus some shirts, pajama pants, and shorts that I had before. But that's not gonna last.

  • This is one that I decided many many years ago, at (I think) my cousin Angie's baby shower. Nobody is EVER wrapping toilet paper around my pregnant belly, no matter how much they beg, plead, or call me a wet blanket. Never.

Missing the obvious

Okay. So I was out shopping recently, can't remember where or when it was. But I'd put one of my green bags up on the counter with the stuff I was buying so the checkout chick could pack it in there. So what does she do? She starts putting it in a plastic bag. And then she said "Did you want this in here?" referring to the green bag.

Um, no, I just wanted to put it there for no reason at all. Duh.
