I Aten’t Dead

Yep, so I suppose technically we have a crawling baby, but at this point he only goes a few inches before he goes *splat*. Ah well. He’s dragging himself though.

Today I found a king size mattress at the local Salvation Army shop. $150, looks (and smells) like it’s in really good condition, and we pick it up tomorrow afternoon.

And it’s supposed to be raining the rest of the week. Great for the plants, not so good for my nappies.

I have a 6 square metre area in our back yard dug up for a vegetable garden. Yep, so hopefully in a month or two we’ll have some fresh rockmelon (canteloupe), capsicum (peppers), butternut pumpkin (squash), and carrots (umm…carrots). Then I might try some more complicated plants, like strawberries, cauliflower, broccoli.

Speaking of plants, last weekend we lost our nectarine tree to a strong wind. It was mostly dead anyway, and what little fruit sprouted from it last year, the birds got to before we could. Now we’ve got space for an apple tree (when I get around to finding one).

Oh yes, and I got some bricks off Freecycle that we’re picking up this weekend too. Yay.

And this is what our bottlebrush looks like in full bloom. Here’s another.

I wanna do that crawl…

Well, he’s still rocking. And rocking, and rocking, and rocking. And slightly moving an arm or a knee here or there, but only tends to move backwards at this stage.

However! This just in! He looks as if he’s going to do it VERY SOON, as in, maybe by the end of the weekend. We’ll keep you posted.

He’s sitting up quite a bit lately (in fact, anytime I put him down on the lounge room floor I’ll put him sitting) for longer periods. And then he tips over and his head goes CLUNK and he either goes about his business or cries for a cuddle.

So the whole food thing. He’s tried an egg yolk which he dropped on the floor, and tasted butter a few times (which he appears to like), but that’s about it. I know most people start with rice cereal, but in the words of his third grandmother Patty, “I’m a rebel. Oy.” He doesn’t seem that interested in food as food at the moment anyway. Something interesting to chew on and rip to shreds, however, yes.

And he’s discovered his tongue. He’s been sticking it out all the time and making funny saliva-type noises with his mouth.

He’s still only got the two bottom teeth, but he’s working on at least three more. In fact, I thought one was going to break through the other day. I was SURE I felt a little sharp point, but it hasn’t come up yet. Grrr.

And that’s the Caleb Report for Friday the 19th of October.

Hmm.

Okay. Tell me something. Is it a contradiction that all the health authorities are telling us to eat fresh fruits & vegetables, but when our children start eating “solids” it’s supposed to be mush out of a jar or powder out of a box?

And they want us to pay HOW MUCH for one of those little jars? No thanks. I think I’ll give my boy fresh food. The cost savings (and higher nutrient content) is worth the extra work for me.
